Thank you for this explanation of the voice mail greeting options for Magic Jack! I am just setting this up for the first time today, and I'm excited to save money using Magic Jack. However, I was scratching my head, too, wondering how a temporary message was different from the unavailable message I had just recorded! I just went in the order they appeared in the menu (1.unavailable, 2. busy, 3. name... and when I got to 4. temporary greeting I was thinking... "What is this going to be used for??"). Without this post I would have had no idea how to set up my outgoing messages in their voice mail system. I probably would have left the temporary message blank, not knowing what it was for. It's a poor excuse that the product was rolled out without adequate support FAQs for this... it would take someone 5 minutes to add an article on their website about it. I'm going to write to them RIGHT NOW to tell them that they should add this information to their online Knowledge base. Thanks for your help!

wow man...i agree and your solution is awesome...for people looking for Cisco AnyConnect 64bit alternative not working etc...here are the instructions:

installing opensource openconnect vpn for cisco:

in ubuntu get openconnect and network-manager-openconnect

sudo apt-get install openconnect
sudo apt-get install network-manager-openconnect
sudo reboot
when reboot is done on top of the desktop click on the icon for network and there should be a new option “vpn” navigate to it and click on configure
type the domain i.e. vpn.yourdomain.com and save
then again click on vpn and connect this type next to the host click on the little icon and it will fetch the login screen type your login

Thanks Robert! Glad it was helpful to you.

I'm afraid I'm having networking issues at the moment...can't quite remember how I had it working before on a single machine without a router behind a firewall... I do remember switching it to "Bridged" but that isn't working this time around :(.

The new MJ firmware is not so easy to crack to get the credentials out, else I'd do that and use it with any SIP phone on Ubuntu natively...still working on that one.

What can I say this was the best definitive article for debugging the magic jack on Ubuntu , I'm running 10.10. I installed oracle VM installed the guest additions to recognize the USB. Than installed windows XP, and the magic jack. I was able to make calls out but not receive any calls. Changing the network adaptor in the VM network settings from NAT to Bridged in addition to advanced network settings to "allow all" worked like a charm ! I decided to kick cell phone with t-mobile to the curb. Ridiculous bills ugh. Nice job ! thanks again.

Thanks Gaelic,

I understand and know your frustration fully well. I tried "calling" them as well through that LivePerson thing that they had a few years ago. Nobody in that office actually knows what's going on. As for Ubuntu? Nobody knew what it was!

It's almost time for me to renew it, and I'm wondering if I should or not...

Their "tech support" isn't just bad, it's some of the WORST I've ever experienced. The first agent I "spoke" to assured me that it now worked with Ubuntu. Then he gave up and sent me to "Erwin". Erwin told me that they were working on it and that if I wanted to use MJ I had to get windows. I shouldn't USE Ubuntu. I HATE Windows. It can go back on this computer when I'm dead. MJ is junk. Even when I had Windows the calls dropped all the time and the sound quality was chancy. Sometimes it worked great and sometimes it was so broken up you couldn't understand a single word. I seriously regret paying for this piece of $#!^!

Hi.
I've just use MagicJack in ubuntu throu VirtualBox OSE, with windows XP - SP3 as virtual machine, and it worked great. I guess it may be that the copy of xp used to create VM, might need updates on drivers or something may went wrong on system.

Then again, I could be wrong, and you might not need drivers to simply recognize the device under Ubuntu...

Thanks Grip. I hadn't seen the thread.

The thing is, the hardware isn't the showstopper here. If anyone from MagicJack actually tells you that, it's complete bollocks. I can run fine via VMWare in Ubuntu, and this can only happen if Ubuntu recognizes the device and loads some kind of driver for it...

I'm happy to help you build this. I haven't built drivers before, but like I said, if Ubuntu can recognize this as a "TigerJet" device, we're almost halfway home.
