I have troubles coming to terms with Android phones, but I am rather intrigued by the prospect of Android tablets. As someone who is in dire need of a relatively mobile PDF reader, I am eagerly awaiting the dawn of the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the wave of clones to follow it (it goes without saying that the iPad is out of the question).
Angry Birds has recently become available for Android, free of charge. While this game is simply a modern version of QBASIC Gorillas for me, I still find it incredibly addictive. The most viable option for me to play it, right now, is to run the Android emulator via Eclipse on Ubuntu. The smell that’s wafting around right now is of sick.
A much more entertaining option is to port the game to GNU/Linux, or create a free clone like TuxKart or SuperTux (both excellent clones of the respective Mario titles).
This would also negate the need for Java and emulation.

Could you possibly write a guide on how you set up the emulation for angry birds on your PC? Can it be done in windows? Would really love to play it on my PC Thanks!
Hi Marc,
I can certainly try to write a guide as soon as I get around to doing it myself. My guide will be for GNU/Linux for the initial steps, at least, but most of it should transfer over to Windows without much effort.
I haven’t actually emulated it yet, so I’ll be doing that probably later this evening to test it out. Will write about it as soon as I can!
Thanks for your comment!
I’m guessing fail on this eh? I know when I tried, the music came up, but the video is unusable. I tried platform 2.2 and 1.6 with the sdk emulator….
Exactly. The emulator worked fine, the music came up, but the video was completely useless. I tried with the same platform and emulator versions as well.
I think we might just have to pull our socks up and build a FOSS version of the game ourselves.
how long does something like this take? I have also been eagerly wanting to play this game. I’m always stealing my friends Captivate to play it. I cant afford to go out and buy one for myself yet. So i was just curious how long making a version of the game that would work on a pc would take?
Thanks for your comment Donnie!
One of the advantages of free software projects is that the community can get involved in helping to build the game. I want to bring this idea to the attention of the fine folks at UbuntuForums and see if some of us could get together to work on this as a group.
Once that is done, I’d suspect we’d spend a fair bit of time designing the inner workings of the game before writing even a single line of code. However, once the codebase grows, the community is usually able to pitch in and work speeds up.
it’s very difficult to give you exact times, unfortunately. Keep watching for it though. I want to get UbuntuForums involved very soon. I’ll update this blog when I get a chance to do that.
As promised:
UbuntuForums Angry Birds Topic
Let’s see how much heat this can gather!
Aw.. I forgot my pass to Ubuntu. Haven’t used a distro heavily since Hoary…. I’ll drop a few comments there if I manage to get logged in.
Thanks! The thread is getting lively.
Does anyone know what the problem is with the video when running Angry Birds with 2.2? With 2.1 the colors are light blue and the right column is white. Is there an issue with the orientation of the screen maybe? I see that in 2.2 the white area is green and it is scrolling.
Hey mate, same problem here. I think it is a screen orientation issue. I wonder if there’s a way to set the emulator to fix that…maybe enable an accelerometer or change the screen resolution to its landscape equivalent?
Thanks for your comment!
Update!
I can’t get it working in landscape mode either. When the emulator is running, hit Ctrl+F11 to get it to flip to landscape. It just doesn’t work with Angry Birds… =(
