Eff Acer

Remember my Acer Timeline? The lovely thing that was the subject of various spats at Acer on tech support? Well, it’s died again. This time it’s found an incredibly creative way of doing so; the monitor backlight is gone.

So technically it works except I can’t see a damn thing.

Eff you Acer. Before an important deadline too.

Eff you… Show me more →

Mockup for a Cock-Up

Earlier today, Kalenree sent me this article. I must say that the solutions for the iPhone 4 reception issue are absolutely hilarious (the Band Aids are actually for sale). I notice that they get more and more absurd, culminating in the last suggestion of modifying one’s own appendages to use the damn device!

I showed the article to my techhead friend James (of the GTA4 potato chip video fame), and he quickly mocked this image up. I was rendered speechless for a few minutes and had to hold my nose so as to… Show me more →

AdBard

I’m now part of the AdBard network. It’s similar to Google Adsense but only for FLOSS advertisements, or ads for products they deem to be ethically sound.

Happy to be part of the team! Thanks for letting me aboard, AdBard!… Show me more →

Pieces of Me Across the Continent

One of the tales in the voluminous Hindu mythological canon speaks of a group of Yadava boys tricking a wise old sage into thinking one of them was a pregnant woman (a disguise – as part of the trick). When the sage found out, he got angry to say the least and vowed that the mace the boy was hiding under his clothes (to appear pregnant) would be the fall of the entire Yadava race.

The boys got frightened and ground the mace up into a fine powder and threw it all over the land, hoping this would dispel… Show me more →

Empathy towards Pidgin

I must say that, having been forced to use Empathy briefly, that I find the conversation interface to be marvelous and eye-catching.

I know that Empathy is designed to eventually become the bona fide IM client on GNOME, but feature-wise it’s still a long way off from where Pidgin is.

So my question is this: is there a way to skin Pidgin’s conversation windows to look like Empathy’s, without having to rewrite a bulk of Pidgin’s core code? This way I can experience Empathy’s impressive conversation interface while still enjoying my favourite Pidgin features (OTR OTR OTR OTR… Show me more →

How to Survive Your Algorithms Course

Let’s face it. Nobody actually knows how to derive proofs correctly. Scratch that…everyone knows how to derive proofs correctly, but never correct enough for the markers.

That’s right. You have a plethora of techniques to prove correctness of code or mathematical equations, but none of your techniques will be correct as far as the markers are concerned. This is obviously how it works in real life; when great physicists and mathematicians proved the correctness of their equations in their research papers, 15% of papers were rejected with comments and 85% were given a zero and a failing letter grade… Show me more →

Five Things You Should Learn from Academic Society

Here is what I have gained by being part of a pseudo-”exclusive” academic society:

1) The ability to recognize whether a new acquaintance is open-minded or not.

2) The ability to recognize whether a new acquaintance is broad-minded or not.

3) The ability to separate the thinkers from the non-thinkers.

4) A new appreciation for non-conformists (within reason).

5) Learning how to deal with paperland and administrivia.

More on each topic soon… Show me more →

My gEdit Programming Setup

In response to a couple of questions, I’ve decided to list the plugins I use in my gEdit to maximize my C/C++ programming productivity:

First, you need the following extra repository (if you’re on Ubuntu, that is): Ubuntu-on-Rails PPA

Then, download the following packages:

- gedit-plugins
- gedit-gmate
- gedit-latex-plugin (if you want to use gEdit for LaTeX work)
- exuberant-ctags (for class browser functionality)

Restart gEdit, if it’s open.

I’ve enabled the following plugins under Edit –> Preferences –> Plugins:

- Class Browser –> this one is far better than the… Show me more →

Redeeming Quality of the Trackball

I have an older Blackberry, the one with the trackball that always sticks and sputters at the wrong times. Some time ago, I wrote about cleaning the trackball using hardly any tools except a paper clip safety pin (oops! It’s been a long time since I looked over that post).

Well, after two years, the trackball finally breathed its last today. No attempts to clean it (with more than just a paper clip, even!) worked, and I finally decided to get it changed at the cell phone store.

Armed with a new trackball, the… Show me more →
